Look What I Made!

If it doesn’t fit…

…You must rip it.

And so it goes with the Jaywalker, or should I say the yarn formerly known as the Jaywalker.  It now goes by this symbol:

Frogpile

I kept thinking that if I just kept going, it would get bigger.  Which is true, I suppose, since the tube was getting longer and it was growing a heel flap and all that, but it wasn’t getting bigger AROUND.  Once I decided to actually try it on, what I had been suspecting for some time proved true – it was not going to go over my heel.  Proof:

Small Sock

Alas.  But!  It was my first sock.  I’m sure nobody’s first sock works. Right? RIGHT?

And then there’s my rationalization sour grapes fact that while I love the Jaywalker pattern, I didn’t really love it with this yarn – it was too dark or something and it just didn’t look as nice as all the other Jaywalkers in the world.

Have no fear. The sock is not off the hook. I will Jaywalk again, with lighter, more colorful yarn.  This yarn, has already be re-cast-on for a sock from SKS.  Don’t know which pattern yet, but I’ll keep you posted.

I frogged my first sock at least 2 times (and then changed yarn…) Hang in there!

Hey, I’ve made a few pairs of socks, but when I came to the Jaywalker, I had the same dang problem. Only worse – I didn’t try it on till I was almost done!! Major ripping. There is a pattern out there (check out the Grumperina’s website)that you can make the sock a little wider. It was very frustrating, because I REALLY liked how it looked, and enjoyed doing the pattern. Good luck!

I had the same problem with Jaywalker. Maybe some of us don’t have the right shape of foot for Jaywalker. I don’t know. I don’t think there’s anything odd about my feet but as soon as I got down to the heel, it was too tight. I ripped in frustration and haven’t gone back. I’d like a pair of Jaywalkers but I need some more time to cool off.

Lots of folks had probs with the Jaywalkers as they are a pretty snug sock — don’t give up though!

Yep, same problem for me with the Jaywalkers. But I went up a needle size and it made a world of difference.

Oh, I’ll join in on the Jaywalker woes…but I just kinda hated it. The yarn I was using wasn’t right for the pattern, but I also just didn’t like the flat, nonstretchy fabric it made. I like Broadripple much better (a Knitty pattern), and have made it twice in Cascade Fixation. I also saw that Flint Knits’ Pamela Wynne just posted her own pattern, called Marigold, that sort of evokes the Jaywalker aesthetic, but is much stretchier.

Anyway, thanks for leaving your comment on my Sahara post! I’m really excited to work on it; in fact, I can’t stop petting it.

Keep going! I admit I haven’t seen Jaywalkers like that before, but that makes them unique. I want to see them finished.

[...] — joymichelle @ 2:03 pm I have had issues knitting my first socks.  I started with the Jaywalkers that tried to choke me from the foot up.  Rip.  Then I managed to complete a passable Woven Stitch sock, but somebody tied a knot (the [...]
